Trần Anh Hùng is a Vietnamese-born French film director. After studying cinematography at the Ecole Lumiere, he made his first short film, an elegant ghost story, La Femme Mariée de Nam Xuong, and then two years later his second short, The Stone of Waiting. Trần is considered to be at the forefront of a wave of acclaimed overseas Vietnamese cinema and famously directed an adaptation of Haruki Murakami's novel Norwegian Wood.

With a career racking up prizes at Cannes, Venice and the Césars, as well as an Oscar nomination, the softly spoken film-maker continues to quietly create meticulously composed films. The line between reportage photography and film-making isn't a particularly fuzzy one when it comes to studying the way Tran works: in every aspect of his work the composition is reliably exquisite.
