Alastair Thain is one of the UK’s most internationally acclaimed photographers, reputed for the originality of his portrait and character photographer.

During his career, Alastair has worked for the majority of the international magazines and news journals/newspapers.

The award winning book SKIN DEEP, published by Penguin Viking in 1991, comprises a gallery of Thain’s brilliant and subversive portraits. Gathered together they represent a new pantheon of modern celebrity and myth.

In 1997, Alastair and photojournalist Tom Stoddart collaborated on an exhibition about war torn Sarajevo called “Edge Of Madness” at Royal Festival Hall. Alastair’s extraordinary landscape series from the devastated city illustrated the decimation and destruction that scarred the city after over 5 years of war. The landmark show attracted huge critical acclaim as well as an audience of over 35,000 people, before touring England, Denmark and Sweden.

Alastair’s portraiture and humanitarian work has seen him sought after to do television commercials for the United Nations featuring key international political figures and celebrities, Nikon cameras and the New York Mayor’s Office for their “Battered Wives” campaign.

Over the last decade, much of Alastair’s work has been shot using cameras that he designed and built himself. These super-large format systems combine the flexibility of a medium format system with the detailed, hyper-real images usually associated with large format plate cameras.
